so im doing the movie mean girls and finding an article that had the arguments and points i was looking for, but i found this book review from the woman’s review of books thats a mixed review of three books. one of them is queen bees and wannabes written by rosalind wiseman. which happens to be the book that mean girls is based on! so i read it and found many of the issues i had thought about bringing up in my essay and some we’ve discussed in class like race and the how minorities are put into a their stereotypes. my focusing question was going to be how does the movie show that a girls abuse on a person is both different has a bigger effect on a person then a boys. which is a major issue in this movie and book. this review even say that in queen bees and wannabes it shows ‘that boys tent to specialize in physical or overt aggression while girls are more likely to use relational aggression.’ they go further to explain that girls are told to be proper and what not, but they have anger to. so when they release it its often under the radar. and like we discussed in class there is huge race stereotypes in this film. i fact in the very beginning the main character is introduces to the american highschool ‘scene’. her new friends go on by listing off all the different cliques including “cool asains, asain nerds, the plastics, and unfriendly black hotties” they also have two asain foreign exchange students who have sexual relations in a teacher. also the “plastics” are a group of the stereotypical rich, skinny, white girls. the only minority in power throughout the entire movie is the school principal who happens to be black. as you can see i have sooo much to talk about in my paper

i chose the movie Mean Girls. i remember seeing this movie over and over and not getting board because its one of those films where you notice something different every time you watch it! also for me, the more i watch it the more i see a deeper meaning behind the plot and characters. if any of you have ever seen Mean Girls (silly question- everyone seen it) but for those of you who have, your thoughts on it might not be positive ones. you probably think its a silly high school movie that sums up pretty much everything we dont want to remember about those 4 years of our lives i.e. popularity contests, bad decisions and regrets, the boyfriend girl friend drama!! ya all those struggles are magnified through out this film, but thats were the deeper meaning comes in. these girls have a system, or a social hierarchy really, that they live by and when someone becomes a threat all hell breaks lose pretty much. in the movie they actually compared it to the junlge wild life. even filming day dreamed scenes with the teens acting like the wild animals and dealing out their issues like “they would in the wild”. so i plan to take that route with my paper

michael moores argument in sicko is clearly how horrible and corrupt americas health care system is, according to him. and i say according to him because he only shows his point of view, there was one republican canadian man who shared moores views on the subject but, he did not compile enough information in the interview to consider it an altogether different opinion. however, being that he chose to share his beliefs via movie, only showing his ideas is alright and can actually make it a better film because to much in a production can confuse and audience. if he had argued this thesis through an essay, then only showing his views would be a mistake. its encouraged to discuss other opinions other then the writers. moores certainly does an excellent job arguing his points in the film in a number of different ways; he uses emotions, comical sarcasm, and music to make the viewer to feel how he wants you to feel. at one point when i was watching a woman talk about the loss of her husband and how simple it could have been prevented if her own co workers we not so self fish and corrupt. i was crying! michael set this mood up to prove a point. on the other hand, i found it funny the way he introduced cuba. showing the map on fire and the sarcasm in his voice about “lucifer” being their leader! micheal also set this mood up. it was obviously a convincing film and can make anyone think twice about american health care

quotes i found interesting:

“His acceptance speech is remembered well for the words, “We live in fictitious times. We live in the time where we have fictitious election results that elect a fictitious president. We live in a time where we have a man sending us to war for fictitious reasons…. Shame on you, Mr. Bush. Shame on you.” (1) Immediately, Moore was accused of exploiting the situation.”

-from hearing his acceptance speech you can tell he is not private about his opinions protaining to the former president. he certainly dose expoilte the situation to make a stement that he knows people will listen and believe now that he has won awards for his work.

He titles his film Roger and Me, protests in front of Kmart with some of the victims of the Columbine shooting, and tries to persuade congressmen to send their kids to war as soldiers–these are just a few instances of his strong on-screen appearances that form a large part of his rhetorical strategy.

-Michael definantly does have an on screeen presance, and he is a good director in the sense that he can make his audience feel any emotion he wants them to, through his work

Later, during the post-Oscar press conference, he attempted to justify his acceptance speech by declaring, “I’m an American.” And when asked by a surprised journalist, “That’s it?” Moore replied, “That’s a lot.” Then he continued, “I love my country. I love democracy.” Undoubtedly, these words demonstrate the essence of his attitude and provide a reason for all of his undertakings. Moore portrays himself as a devoted believer in American democratic values, and this faith spurs him to action. From the very beginning of his movie career, he puts forward criticism of contemporary American politics and society. According to Moore, democracy is not limited solely to the electoral process but should be practiced to achieve a high level of egalitarianism in American society

-reading this makes me wonder about his motives of making his films. he makes american seem so bad, but he loves america? maybe hes trying to make us better by showing us who we are and how better he thinks we could become.

I love Breakfast at Tiffany’s! i first heard about it as a book written by Truman Copote, who also wrote In Cold Blood, which happens to be one of my favorite books. i read it in honors english last year with my class, and we broke it dissected it revealing Copote’s genius. i ive never read the book Breakfast at Tiffany’s but i want to after watching this movie. the one thing i love about Copote’s writing style is his characters. in In Cold Blood he did a brilliant job of explaining to the reader who the men in the book really were, and here he creates hid own character. her name is Holly and she is a nonchalant, carefree, woman. throughout the movie she shows this in her actions and the body language. everything from not naming her cat, or not knowing the day of the week. even in the very beginning of the movie when she meets the man, Paul, who is another main character, she simply allows him into her house after just meeting him and tells her where she is going. later she actually climbs out of her window and up to his room and falls asleep in bed with him. which brings me to another large part of her personality and body language. her attitude toward men. throughout the movie men are constantly giving her attention and wanting her around them. i cant tell if she likes it for attention or if she is just wanting to have fun and not be a party pooper.. well she is certainly someone any woman would look up to in the sense she is stylish and can get a man to give her whatever she likes. i dont think she wants the things all these men give her but she wants people to think she does. its hard to understand her but Truman does a fabulous job of creating someone we can all relate with.

I love this commercial! The title says “evolution” but in fact it has nothing to do with that, its actually about a different popular debate; body image. And when I first watched this commercial I had no interest in using it for this assignment because it wasn’t funny like all the other commercials I was thinking about using, but I thought about it as I kept browsing my notes from earlier in class and remembering what Ms. Alison said which was “ask yourself: which values are portrayed” so I really hope this is what she meant! (: This advertisement portrays how magazines and other forms of media deceive their customers, mostly women, into believing that what they see in all the ad pictures is how you should look. When in reality! ..as this commercial proves.. even the models don’t look like that! I really like how it shows the model from the start to finish even as they did the photoshopping, giving a good idea as to how much work they do on these ads to make the product they’re selling look “perfect” to their target market. Also, idk why, but I want to buy Dove things after watching this, more so then the companys who use photoshop to mislead the public. And to hit on some of the things we discussed I class today; the introduction of this commercial is casual and at first you’re not sure what they’re going to show you. Then they do a close up on the model and serious music starts to play, it changes the mood completely, especially as you watch the picture of the model being photoshopped! It looks fine before they changed it and seemed pointless.. its weird that people pay all that money for something unobtainable.
